Raj Shah, President

Raj is the Founder and President of the Nanubhai Education Foundation. Previously, he was a Special Assistant in the US Department of Defense. Raj serves as a reserve F-16 pilot in the United States Air Force where he completed a tour in Iraq. He has also worked as consultant at McKinsey & Co., assisting clients in both the public and private sectors. Raj holds degrees from from Princeton University and The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, where he was a Soros Fellow. On a lighter note, Raj loves traveling through India - on his last visit he survived a motorcycle trip from Delhi to Leh on an Enfield Bullet.

 

Cat Biddle, Executive Director

Cat Biddle, formerly one of NEF's full time teachers at Kadod High School, is the Executive Director of Nanubhai. Cat's interest in Indian development began at Brown University where she double majored in South Asian Studies and History and spent her junior year studying abroad at St. Stephen's College while interning for the Delhi based non-profit TARSHI (Talking about reproductive and sexual health issues). Before joining Nanubhai, Cat spent two years as an Americorps Teaching Fellow in South Boston with the national non-profit after school program Citizen Schools, while concurrently completing her M.Ed in Curriculum Development from Lesley University. As a teacher at Kadod High School in 2008-09, her time was marked by the improvement of her Hindi, craving for an English bookstore and complete enjoyment of her time in and out of class with her students.



PROGRAM TEAM:

Joanne Yoong, Vice-President of Programs

Joanne is an Associate Economist at the RAND Corporation in Washington DC, where she works for RAND Labor and Population, Health and the Institute for Civil Justice. Her primary research interests are financial and behavioral incentives for health and financial decision making in vulnerable populations in the United States and the developing world, including those in Africa and India. In addition to holding an undergraduate degree from Princeton University, Joanne graduated with a Ph.D in Economics from Stanford University in 2008, where she held the Starr Foundation Fellowship at the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies. At Stanford, she designed and taught "Development Policy and Practice", a service-learning Economics course in the paired advanced undergraduates with locally-based organizations to work on collaborative research projects. Prior to pursuing her graduate work, Joanne was a Fixed Income analyst at Goldman, Sachs and Company in New York and London. In Joanne's travels to India, she has authored papers on gender bias, children's health, microfinance and local entrepreneurship, but her secret research calling is to really understand the cosmic strangeness of Indian Chinese food.



Kirsten Hill, India Program Director

Kirsten graduated from Houghton College in New York with a degree in International Relations with minors in Intercultural and Religious Studies. Her interest in cultures led her to study for a semester in Thailand at Chiang Mai University where she studied the language and Asian history and culture. While there, she taught English classes to Buddhist monks in University and volunteered working at a Montesory school with internally displaced children from Loas, Cambodia and Thailand's many hilltribes. This experienced drew her to decide to teach abroad after obtaining her degree. Kirsten is interested in women's issues, development and all things cultural. She is a self-professed bookworm and curry lover. She has enjoyed learning a new language, meeting her 8th, 9th and 11th year students and learning how to properly put on a sari!



Priya Garg, Director of Recruiting and 2008 Summer Intern

Priya Garg graduated from Emory University in 2008 with a degree in International Studies and a minor in Spanish. She first started working for the Nanubhai Education Program through its internship program during the summer of 2008. She describes her time spent in Kadod as simply amazing, and although she went there to primarily teach students, they in turn taught her a lot as well! She also describes her experience in Kadod as one that she wouldn't trade for the world. Currently, Priya is coordinating Nanubhai's recruiting efforts in order to bring more people from the United States to experience India the way she did. She highly encourages anyone who is interested in making a difference in the lives of hundreds of students to apply for one of our open positions!



Vanisha Gandhi, Summer 2008 Intern and Summer Program Coordinator

Vanisha Gandhi is currently a junior at Stanford University, majoring in Human Biology. During summer 2008, she received a Fellowship through Stanford to research and implement a program through which to ameliorate the summer learning gap at The Kadod High School. In addition to teaching, she spent her time in Kadod gathering cultural and educational data, and interviewing families and students. She also enjoyed serving as the resident Gujarati-English translator, and being able to marvel at the hilarious misunderstandings and amusing situations she experienced as an Indian-American in Kadod. Saying goodbye to her students in Kadod was one of the most difficult things Vanisha has ever experienced—but she has returned to them in spring 2009 to run an English-Technology summer program as part of her thesis research at Stanford!

 


MARKETING TEAM:

Mary Katherine Brooks, Vice President of Marketing and Outreach

MK is currently spearheading NEF's marketing, branding, and fundraising efforts in the US. A product of an underfunded rural public school in TN, MK credits her current success to a supplemental educational outreach program that helped her overcome her school's deficiencies and apply to top-tier universities. MK holds degrees in Russian and Finance from Georgetown, an MA in International Studies from UPenn, and an MBA in Finance from Wharton. After spending seven years trading equities in Tokyo and Hong Kong, MK is thrilled to be working with a group whose mission inspires and invigorates her daily. In her spare time, MK enjoys running and singing to country music, pretending to relax, and emailing articles and ideas to the NEF staff.



Ashley Evans, Director of Communications

Ashley Evans joined the Nanubhai Education Foundation in 2007. Ashley is a master's student at the Stanford University School of Education and has worked with Nanubhai on projects that include program coordination, fund-raising, events, and communications. She is a graduate of Princeton University, where she earned a degree in Classics. She also studied for a semester at the Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies in Rome. Ashley has worked for George Washington University in the Office of Academic Planning and Assessment and within the Princeton University Psychology Department. Previous experience includes two years as an analyst in the insurance practice of Celent, a technology research firm. During her studies at Princeton, she first became interested in India while learning about its diverse religions and cultures, as well as its role as a developing nation.

 

Heidi Hoopes, Director of Social Media

Heidi has a B.S. in biology from the University of Utah, but is currently a stay-at-home mother. Previously she worked as an analyst for nonprofit research in educational standards and in a museum setting. Her interests have since taken her to exploring social networking tools, especially in multidisciplinary contexts. In 2009 she began volunteering for Nanubhai because of her desire to use technology for change. As a mother, she recognizes that every parent has similar dreams for their children, but that many are privileged what not all can afford. She hopes that that someday technological innovation and global networking will make the world truly flat, to borrow a phrase, but in the meantime is excited by this opportunity.





OUTREACH TEAM:


Kandarp Shah, VP of Business Development

Kandarp joined Nanubhai in 2009 as the Associate VP of Business Development. He holds an undergraduate degree from Cornell University in Applied Economics and received the Howard and Maxine Abner Business Counseling Award from the entrepreneurship program. Since graduating, Kandarp has worked in his family's business, BabyVision, across many functional areas, including sales and marketing, product development/sourcing and operations. He has extensive experience in small business development and has traveled to rural India several times in the past decade. He recognizes the importance of education in creating opportunities for underprivileged children and the role education played in his own family's story. Upon learning about Nanubhai, Kandarp was attracted to the foundation's commitment to advancing education and impressed by its remarkable achievements to date. He is excited to join such a dynamic, dedicated and entrepreneurial team and contribute his time and energy to support NEF as it delivers quality education to children in rural India.



Anita Patel , Director of Grassroots Development

Anita joined Nanubhai in 2009 as the Director of Grassroots Development. She holds an undergraduate degree in Business Administration with a specialization in Mass Communication from the University of Florida. In college, Anita helped charter a colony of Delta Phi Omega Sorority, Incorporated, which emphasizes Children's Education and Literacy as it's philanthropic purpose. Through the organization, she has been able to spread awareness and raise funds to help eradicate illiteracy in South Asia through the following national beneficiaries: Pratham, Asha for Education, and C.A.R.E. As an Alumnus, Anita has served on the National Council as the National VP of Expansion. She began her career in the financial services industry as an analyst at Merrill Lynch headquarters. Currently, she is an associate with the Global Wealth Management group at Morgan Stanley Smith Barney. Anita is also a volunteer teacher for Junior Achievement, preparing young people to succeed in a global economy by teaching financial literacy, local economics, and free enterprise. Anita came across NEF at a forum in NYC, where she was surprised to hear the name of her father's high school. Anita was moved by the integrity and passion of the speaker regarding NEF's mission, and is grateful to be a part of NEF. She looks forward to her upcoming trip to India to visit the students and teachers at Kadod High School.



Melissa Ivins, Director of Grassroots Outreach and Former Nanubhai Fellow

Melissa Ivins was a full time 4th and 9th standard English teacher for NEF at Kadod High School and is currently a graduate student at Yale School of Forestry. She graduated from Princeton University in 2007 with an AB in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. In 2008, she returned to the university, earning her teaching certification in elementary education and middle school science throughPrinceton's Program in Teacher Preparation. While teaching in her 4th and 6th grade co-operative classrooms, Melissa worked with many students from India and students whose parents are from India. A desire to learn more about these students' heritage is part of what led her to India. Melissa has also worked as a volunteer ESL teacher for adult classes at The English School of Lawrenceville and the Princeton Public Library. As a Fellow, when she wasn't teaching or lesson planning, Melissa spent her time studying Hindi, observing local wildlife, and wandering around Kadod making small-talk through a mix of languages and wild gesturing.



Nita Nehru, Marketing and Outreach Coordinator

Nita joined Nanubhai in 2009 as NEF's Public Relations and Fundraising Coordinator in India as well as the US. In addition to holding an undergraduate degree from Claremont McKenna College in International Relations and History, she is currently pursuing her Master of International Affairs degree at Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs. Prior to joining Columbia, Nita worked in sales, marketing and event planning for an Indian technology company. She has been involved with numerous philanthropic efforts as well, including volunteering with Pratham, the Naandi Foundation, and Digital Partners, among others. Nita heard about NEF's great work during an NGO Fair; the moment she spoke with board members Raj Shah and MK Brooks, Nita knew that she wanted to be a part of such a dynamic, passionate and committed team. She is really excited to travel around India persuading others of the importance of NEF's educational efforts!

 

DEVELOPMENT TEAM:

Geetanjali Chopra, Director of Grantwriting/Social Media Associate

Geetanjali Chopra, aka Joey, was born in India, but has spent most of her life in other parts of the world. After graduating from Mount Holyoke College with a degree in International Relations and Communications, and interning at the Indian Society of International Law and UNHCR, Joey moved to Winnipeg, Canada, where she spent two years as the Communications and Development Coordinator for a youth-oriented media arts centre. Joey joined the Nanubhai team in 2009, and is pleased to be able to use her skills to benefit a cause she feels so strongly about!
