New York City Fundraiser, March 6th 2009

On March 6th, 2009, the Nanubhai Education Foundation held a fundraiser at the Scholastic headquarters in New York City. Renowned actor Kal Penn (of the TV series House and the film, The Namesake) served as the honored guest for a festive night of entertainment and celebration of Nanubhai's fifth anniversary. Other honored guests include US Olympic Bronze Medalist Raj Bhavsar, Miss India USA 2007 Melanie Kannokada, and Gurbaksh Chahal, successful entrepreneur, author, and star of Fox Television's Secret Millionaire.

The Nanubhai Education Foundation is a non-profit organization focused on advancing the education of rural students in India. Guests at the event enjoyed a spectacular evening of Indian cultural entertainment, including inspirational speeches from the esteemed guests, along with performances by Brooklyn-based My Pet Dragon and the Sa Dance Company. Other highlights included a henna tattoo station, a silent auction, and live auction, which included a lunch with Kal Penn and a flight lesson with Nanubhai founder, Raj Shah.

Nanubhai Education Foundation volunteers have worked tirelessly since 2004 to integrate an innovative program of English and Information Technology education into their focus school of 2,000 students in the Indian state of Gujarat. Building on the success of the previous four years, Nanubhai is now launching an ambitious plan to reach over 6,000 new students by expanding programs into two additional schools. The current goals of Nanubhai include hiring nine new American exchange teachers, creating computer labs with internet connectivity, and increasing graduation rates with particular focus on female students. This fundraiser will help Nanubhai turns its goals into reality.
