CAPACITY BUILDING
In addition to our direct English and Technology efforts, we have several other programs to improve the overall resources and capabilities of our partner schools. Rather than simply providing funds, we partner with the senior leadership in our partner schools to improve the schools in all areas:
Our programs encompass all of the following:
- After-School Tutoring: In addition to our free before and after school Spoken English and Computer classes, students in the 10-12th grades receive 5 additional hours of instruction to help prepare for the national graduation and college placement exams.
- Graduate School Scholarships: Each year, we provide 4 students with need based scholarships that cover 50% of the cost of tuition, room, and board for higher education. Deserving students are selected by the principals of our partner schools.
- Teaching Supplies: Digital cameras, art supplies, notebooks, printers and ESL curricula are provided at our schools for the use of our Nanubhai Fellows and school staff.
- Professional Organization Membership: Nanubhai Fellows work with local teachers to increase membership in local professional organizations for teachers, inviting speakers, and arranging professional development seminars on-site at our partner schools.
- On-going Research: Our summer interns and Nanubhai Fellows conduct on-going research on both school programs and community issues to better help our programs target and address community needs. Last summer, our 2008 interns researched and made recommendations on how to address the summer learning gap in English and Technology subjects at our partner schools and why fewer girls participate in Technology classes.
