Nanubhai works in rural, public, Gujarati medium high schools in partnership with committed local principals, school staff and other administration professionals. Located within Surat district, Gujarat, our schools are in nearby villages, allowing us to affect change not just at the school level, but through collaboration at the district level. The district in which we work is a tribal district, and the majority of our students are identified as being from traditionally oppressed or impoverished communities
The school principals we work with are motivated individuals committed to improving the educational experiences of their students, but are often overwhelmed by the multi-faceted challenges that they face in bringing about change: small budgets for staff salaries and training, lack of material resources, and a large and growing student body to name a few. Nanubhai’s unique Teaching Fellows program provides each school with one or more dedicated Teaching Fellows who work with that school to help improve student outcomes through mentoring young local teachers, providing teacher training seminars and workshops, delivering enrichment programs such as after-school programs, women’s scholarships, and lending libraries. We consider each school a training and incubation center for local teaching talent and student enrichment. Local teachers trained by our staff are committed to changing the face of rural public education and leave our training year to teach in other local rural public schools and mentor future teachers. Students affected by our enrichment programs go on to graduate in increased numbers and report increased confidence in both English and use of computers, both essential skills in the growing Indian job market.
