Teaching Fellows 2011 – 2012:
Sarah Birgé
Sarah Birgé grew up in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont. She received her B.A. in English Language and Literature from the University of Chicago in 2006. After graduation, she spent two years as a New York City Teaching Fellow as a Literacy and Bilingual Social Studies Instructor in a Bronx middle school. She then taught ESL in South Korea for two years and learned to love spicy food! Currently, she is a Master’s candidate in Sustainable Development at the SIT Graduate Institute in Brattleboro, VT. She also does part-time English Language Arts Curriculum consulting for the Cree School Board in Northern Québec. In her spare time, Sarah likes to go hiking and is currently working her way through the books of Charles Dickens. She hopes that she will be able to expand her knowledge of educational techniques by working with her partner teacher. Sarah is also excited to learn a new language, wear some beautiful saris, and try a new cuisine in Gujarat!
Claire Arthurs
Claire Arthurs graduated Cum Laude from Dartmouth College in 2005 with a B.A. in Art History. After graduation, she worked for Dunnington, Bartholow and Miller, LLP, a New York City based law firm. There, she served as a Project Manager and Litigation Paralegal, specializing in Holocaust-era disputes. After working for several years, she decided to pursue her passion for teaching and education, receiving her M.A.T. from Columbus State University in December 2010. There, she developed a research project which investigated ways to improve the current teacher preparation program and create effective ways to improve learning outcomes for students. While finishing her Master’s degree, she worked as an ESL instructor, where she was responsible for curriculum planning. She is currently completing her TESOL Certification from Georgetown University. She has stayed actively involved in the Dartmouth alumni community and is presently a class representative for the school’s alumni fund and an alumni interviewer for prospective students. In her free time, she enjoys being active outdoors, reading, traveling, and cooking. She first became passionate about working in India after reading Amartya Sen’s Development as Freedom, and continues to enjoy reading a wide-range of Indian authors. She is looking forward to serving the city of Kadod and Kadod High School in the coming year.
John Ellington
John Ellington recently graduated from Princeton University in 2011 with a B. A. in History of Science. Last summer, he managed Princeton’s Garden Project and harvested an unprecedented number of heirloom tomatoes. He was also a member of the campus’ award-winning radio station (WPRB), where he discussed news and music items on air. Although he spent his academic career studying Renaissance Europe, John is excited to try something new and refreshing in India. He looks forward to trying his hand at new musical instruments, hiking Gujarat, and allowing Mumbai’s hustle and bustle to overwhelm him just once (or maybe twice). As a California native he cannot wait to say goodbye to New Jersey’s relatively frequent snowfall.
Summer Fellows 2011:
Sindhuri Nandhakumar
Sindhuri Nandhakumar is a rising junior at the University of Pennsylvania studying International Relations and Urban Studies. As a citizen of Sri Lanka with ‘roots’ in India, Sindhu enjoys spicy food, cricket, Indian movies and tropical fruit. Sindhu is excited about spending the summer in Gujarat with the Nanubhai Foundation, only having travelled to South India before. As someone interested in education and education related policy, she’s confident that her summer with Nanubhai is going to be nothing short of an incredible learning experience.
Felicia Kazin
Felicia Kazin graduated from Roger Williams University in 2003 with a degree in English Literature. She is currently working on a dual master’s degree in International Relations/Diplomacy and Asian Studies at Seton Hall University. After completing her undergraduate work, she taught English for two years in Hakodate, Japan. She loved teaching in Japan, but she would like to gain some experience working in the developing world as well. She is also very excited about having the opportunity to pursue research as part of her work with the Nanubhai team. She is looking forward to having the opportunity to live and work abroad again, as well as learning a new language and culture.
